International activities

The Newton Fund

The Newton Fund is a new initiative intended to strengthen research and innovation partnerships between the UK and emerging knowledge economies. It was launched by the Chancellor in April 2014, and will deliver £375 million of funding over the course of five years.

Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020, the successor to FP7, officially launched on 11 December 2013. It is the European Union’s largest ever research and innovation programme with nearly €80billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020)

International subscriptions

The MRC represents the UK on the governing bodies of a number of international biomedical research organisations, such as EMBL, EMBO, the Human Frontier Science Programme, the International Agency for Research on Cancer and Science Europe.

Innovative Medicines Initiative

A public-private partnership between the European Union and the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations with the overall goal of building a more collaborative ecosystem for pharmaceutical R&D in Europe and speeding up the development of more effective and safer medicines for patients.

Other international funding activities

Including the UK Israel Fellowship Scheme in Regenerative Medicine, Money Follows Researchers scheme, and bilateral agreements with overseas research funding agencies.
