Tariffs for brain tissue

In line with a sustainable future for brain banking, the Medical Research Council (MRC) and associated charities have introduced a cost recovery scheme for the provision of tissue. The tariff has been standardised and will be implemented across the UK Brain Bank Network. The proposed tariff is expected to cover approximately half of the costs of retrieval, assessment and archiving of the brain tissue. The MRC will continue to contribute to the remaining costs for the foreseeable future.

The tariffs are as follows:

Not all sample types listed are available from all banks, individual banks will advise on availability.

If you are intending to use human tissue in future projects please remember to include these costs in any upcoming grant applications. Exceptions may be made for pilot studies and if yours falls into this category that should be noted in your application to the tissue bank.

I will be approaching those of you who have requested samples from the brain banks to report publications arising from the studies. I urge you to advise me of any resulting papers as this enable us to demonstrate the impact of tissue provided by the brain banks.

If you have any questions or concerns about this, please do not hesitate to contact us at brainbanks@headoffice.mrc.ac.uk
