MRC Chief Executive Professor Sir John Savill appointed Regius Professor of Medical Science, University of Edinburgh

21 Apr 2017

Today, the Medical Research Council announces its Chief Executive Officer, Professor Sir John Savill, has been appointed, as of 1 April 2018, the Regius Professor of Medical Science at the University of Edinburgh.

Sir John has been awarded this appointment by the Queen, who gave royal assent on 7 April 2017, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to medical research.

On the announcement of his appointment, Sir John said:  “I greatly enjoy my challenging role as the MRC CEO and receive superb support and advice from many of my colleagues.  Until my departure in March 2018 I am committed to doing everything I can to ensure that the MRC is in the best possible shape to transition to UK Research and Innovation.”

Since Sir John took office in October 2010, he has been instrumental in many changes including; the university unit transfer programme which has seen MRC directors reporting great gains for our research from being embedded in a university, and the creation of two new institutes - the UK Dementia Research Institute which will lead on the UK’s dementia research efforts, and Health Data Research UK, which will be dedicated to the use of data to drive improvements in both health and wealth.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy will begin the process of recruiting Sir John’s successor shortly.

With the expected establishment of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) in April 2018, the seven Research Councils, Innovate UK and a new Council, Research England, will be brought together.  Each Council will be headed by an Executive Chair, a role which will combine the responsibilities of the current Chair and CEO of each Council.  The role of Executive Chairs will be crucial to the ambition for UKRI to be a world-leading research and innovation organisation.
