Change to industrial CASE studentships scheme

A change to the MRC industrial Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering (CASE) studentships scheme will see studentships allocated directly to research organisations for two intake years.
This new approach differs from our previous system, where investigators submitted individual industrial CASE studentship proposals directly to an annual call.
Studentships will be allocated directly to research organisations starting from the 2018 intake. The new approach aims to give partner and academic organisations more control over the timescales of their collaborations, enabling industrial CASE studentship opportunities to be created in a more flexible and scalable way. The scheme remit, eligibility and start date for the new student intake – September 2018 – remains unchanged.
To initiate the new approach, research organisations (or groups of organisations such as Doctoral Training Partnerships) who wish to host MRC industrial CASE studentships will submit an institutional bid in July 2017.
Driving innovation and collaborating with industry remains at the heart of our strategy and delivery plans. Our industrial CASE studentships scheme has played a key role in this for many years, developing partnerships and enabling students to benefit from a broad and unique training experience.
The new approach aims to build on the previous success of the scheme, and the enormous potential that industry-academic collaboration has to offer for UK society and the economy, to enhance opportunities for students.
We ask for investigators who were planning to submit individual industrial CASE studentship applications in May 2017 (under the old system) to liaise with their local university or post-graduate study coordinators to help develop an institutional-level bid for studentship positions.
The call for the revised scheme will be launched in April. The deadline for institutional bids will be in July, with decisions announced in September.
