The World Health Organisation (WHO) have today released updated guidelines that make recommendations based on the results of the START and PROUD studies. They say the new policies could help avert more than 21 million deaths and 28 million new infections by 2030. The PROUD study and some of the START study sites were coordinated by the MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL and co-funded by the MRC.

Smokers who survive into old age may hold key to lung health, according to an MRC funded study. UK researchers have identified genetic differences which affect smoking behaviour, and the predisposition of both heavy smokers and non-smokers to suffer poor lung health.
