Medical Research Foundation: The history of the MRC’s charity

The MRC has been eligible to accept charitable bequests and donations since its inception and these donations from the public have been supporting additional medical research for over 80 years.

In the late 1960’s, the MRC registered it’s charitable funds with the Charity Commission as the ‘Trust Funds administered in connection with the Medical Research Council’ charity (registration number 250696).

In September 2011, the current trustees set up a new charitable company with a modern governance structure known as the Medical Research Foundation (registration number 1138226) and in April 2011 the MRC’s charitable funds were transferred to this new charity. Through the Medical Research Foundation, the giving public can continue support the work of the MRC and more of the high quality research and research training that the MRC supports so successfully.
