Battle of Ideas 2012

Date: 20-21st October, 2012

Venue: Barbican, London

The Battle of Ideas 2012 - an annual festival of debate and discussion, organised by the Institute of Ideas - is a must for the intellectually curious and open minded. It provides a forum for free thinking, debate and discussion: in particular, evaluating to what degree the great ideas of freedom, equality, and solidarity, can still provide a foundation for living together in the 21st century.

Topics include Ethical Battles in Science and Medicine strand including: Organ donation: dead or alive?, Epigenetics: are you what your parents ate? and Trust me: I'm a scientist, with speakers: Professor Sir Mark Walport, director, Wellcome Trust; Government Chief Scientific Adviser (from April 2013); Ann Furedi, chief executive, British Pregnancy Advisory Service; Professor Marcus Pembrey, founder and chair, Progress Educational Trust; Hugh Whittall, director, Nuffield Council on Bioethics.

During the festival weekend itself, over 2,000 delegates will attend over 80 sessions, together with hundreds of insightful and thought provoking speakers from across the globe, who represent a wide range of disciplines and viewpoints. The full programme is available here.
