The Ageing Brain

3 May 5.30pm - Jacqueline du Pré Building

Professor Paul Bolam, Dept. of Pharmacology and Associate Director, MRC Anatomical Neuropharmacology Unit, University of Oxford

Like any organ or part of our body, the brain ages! This manifests itself in those annoying little things like “I’ve known her for fifteen years and her name has completely slipped my mind” or the difficulty we can experience when leaping quickly from one idea to another. Structural changes in our brain probably underlie these experiences. This is healthy, normal, ageing and of course, if we use our brain, keep active and eat properly, we can minimise these effects. However, there are many disorders of the brain where the strongest risk factor is age.

Paul Bolam will talk about the ageing brain, healthy ageing and age-related neurological disorders, in particular, Parkinson’s disease and strategies for its treatment that are available now and new strategies that hopefully, will give benefit in the future.
