Addiction research: The next steps
Thursday 21 January 2010, 5.30–7.00pm
British Academy, Carlton House Terrace, London SW1
The Medical Research Council, in partnership with the British Academy, is holding an event to introduce the MRC’s addiction and substance misuse research strategy.
Addiction and substance misuse are major medical, social and economic problems for the UK, resulting in devastating effects on both individuals and families.
The MRC is driving forward a strategy bringing together experts from many disciplines to address the need for new knowledge, and to encourage cross-disciplinary communication and collaboration. Priority themes for research have been agreed and funding will be focused on these key areas.
This strategy has been developed on behalf of the Office for Strategic Coordination of Health Research and is being implemented in partnership with the Economic and Social Research Council.
The event will give an overview of the strategy, why it was launched and its aims, followed by details of the specific research areas to be investigated as part of this initiative.
Speakers include:
- Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, MRC Chief Executive
- Professor David Leon, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Chair of the academic group overseeing the strategy
- Professor David Nutt, Imperial College London
- Professor Colin Drummond, Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London
- Dr Tim Millar, University of Manchester
The meeting will be chaired by Professor Sir Michael Marmot, Director of the International Institute for Society and Health at University College London.
This event will be followed by a reception. Registration is not required as seats will be allocated on arrival.
