MRC Centre for Obesity and Related Metabolic Diseases
Professor Steve O’Rahilly
Director of MRC Centre for Obesity and Related Metabolic Diseases
The MRC Centre for Obesity and Related Metabolic Diseases (MRC CORD) is based at the University of Cambridge Metabolic Research Laboratories in the newly built Institute of Metabolic Science. It was established in 2007 by the MRC and is dedicated to understanding the mechanisms responsible for obesity and related metabolic diseases, with the aims of undertaking high quality scientific research to improve understanding of these conditions and to develop interventions to prevent and treat them. More specifically, MRC CORD provides essential support for many of the high quality research facilities that are fundamental to these studies.
The consortium of investigators that make up MRC CORD is led by Professor Steve O’Rahilly. It brings together researchers from the MRL and other world-leading centres in the Cambridge area, including the MRC Epidemiology Unit, the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, MRC Human Nutrition Research, Cambridge University Departments of Pharmacology and Biochemistry, and the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism.
MRC CORD aims to:
- be an international leader in interdisciplinary research that advances our understanding of human obesity and associated metabolic diseases;
- use this increased understanding to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment;
- create an environment, together with our academic, clinical and industrial partners, that fosters productive interactions between basic and clinical scientists, and stimulates the development of new diagnostics and treatments;
- provide a first-class training environment for clinical and non-clinical scientists.
