MRC Cancer Cell Unit

Professor Ashok Venkitaraman
Director MRC Cancer Cell Unit

The Medical Research Council’s Cancer Cell Unit (CCU) utilises advances made at the research bench as a platform to develop novel tools and reagents for the diagnosis, and ultimately, the treatment of cancer. We focus on innovative interdisciplinary research in three major areas – cancer biology, cancer diagnosis, and cancer therapy. Research in the CCU is facilitated by the unit’s location at the Hutchison / MRC Research Centre on the Addenbrooke’s Hospital site. A leading centre for cancer research, our location enables fruitful interactions with colleagues in the NHS, the CRUK Cambridge Research Institute, and in the clinical and basic science departments of Cambridge University.

Collaborations are key to the success of researchers within the unit. We work with partners from disciplines as varied as medicine, biochemistry, physics, and mathematics, to unravel the molecular and genetic differences that distinguish cancer cells from normal cells. An interdisciplinary approach allows us to rapidly translate findings made at the research bench into clinically viable applications.
