The MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit provides a focus for epidemiological research which maintains and develops the Hertfordshire cohort study and Southampton women’s survey, and supports council’s research programmes into musculoskeletal disease; occupational/environmental medicine; and cardiovascular disease in India. The research programmes aim to delineate: (a) the environmental causes throughout life of osteoporosis/sarcopenia; coronary heart disease/type 2 diabetes mellitus; and occupational disorders; and (b) population-based and high risk preventive strategies against these disorders.
