MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine
Professor Charles ffrench-Constant
Director of MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine
Stem cell science holds great promise for treatment of disease and injury. The Centre for Stem Cell Research brings together 10 research groups, in the Institute for Stem Cell Research, undertaking ground-breaking research into the biology and engineering of stem cells.
Studies are focused on the identity, propagation and lineage commitment of stem cells of embryonic, foetal and adult origin, and their potential applications in drug screening, transplantation and tissue repair. The emphasis is on molecular and cellular mechanisms, utilising post-genomic and transgenic methodologies accompanied by cell and tissue imaging techniques. Primary objectives are to delineate the generic attributes of stem cells, to understand how to control self-renewal and differentiation, and to define which stages of cell development are best suited for particular therapeutic applications.
The centre provides advanced training and career opportunities for home-grown and returning researchers. It is one of the founding centres in the new Centre for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, which aims to draw together basic and translational programmes in stem cell research.
