Inflammatory diseases of the lung, kidney and other organs are important cause of ill health and untimely death, being particularly difficult to treat where persistent inflammation leads to scarring and loss of organ function.
Nevertheless, recent advances in molecular cell biology and in the manipulation of gene expression now provide exciting opportunities to improve understanding of the complex pathogenesis of inflammatory disease in order to develop new approaches to prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Ten major groups housing over 150 investigators have come together as a centre to pursue co-ordinated interdisciplinary research into three key control points in order to address the following therapeutic approaches toward inflammatory responses, namely the initiation, regulation and resolution of inflammation.
