MRC/University of Sussex Centre in Genome Damage and Stability
Professor Anthony Carr
Director of MRC/University of Sussex Centre in Genome Damage and Stability
The Genome Damage and Stability Centre at the University of Sussex was designed to build on the work of the MRC Cell Mutation Unit, which closed in 2001, by broadening its base.
The centre exploits functional and structural homology across eukaryotes, by promoting a multi-organism environment to study DNA damage responses. The centre encompasses expertise in yeast (powerful genetics), Xenopus (biochemistry in the context of replication and nuclear architecture), C. elegans (development), mouse and human cells (relationship to human disease). Many of the genes and pathways involved in genome repair and stability have been identified, and the goal of the centre is to understand the relationships between different pathways in the context of nuclear architecture and basic cellular processes.
