General Practice Research Database

The MRC previously provided access to the General Practice Research Database (GPRD) via a licence agreement. Although this agreement has now come to an end, the MRC remains committed to supporting public health and primary care research and will continue to provide researchers with support for access to GPRD.

Researchers may now apply for the cost of accessing GPRD as part of their grant application to the MRC; these costs should be included under the ‘Directly Incurred’ heading. If you are planning to include costs for accessing GPRD in your grant application, you will need to e-mail Dr Tim Williams to determine the cost of the data.

One benefit of this different approach to funding is that you can obtain GPRD data alone or linked with any of the following datasets: Hospital Episode Statistics; Central Mortality data; Census data; Cancer registry data; Myocardial Infarction (MINAP) data. Please note that some linked datasets require additional permissions from the data custodians. GPRD will advise you of any additional approvals required and how these are obtained.
