About LLHW
Lifelong Health and Wellbeing programme (LLHW) was launched in 2008 as one of the major cross-council grand challenges.

Our aims are to:
- Target factors over the life course that may be major determinants of health and wellbeing in older age.
- Identify and develop effective interventions that lead to improved health and quality of life in later life.
- Inform policy and practice including the development of services and technologies to support independent living.
- Increase capacity and capability in ageing-relevant research.
What we do
Lifelong Health and Wellbeing provides a platform for coordinating ageing research supported by the Research Councils and a dedicated route for funding multidisciplinary ageing research that delivers the shared aims of the LLHW programme.
In the 2011-2015 comprehensive spending period (CSR) it is estimated that the Research Councils will spend approximately £200m on strategic ageing research investments. This is supported by a larger portfolio of underpinning ageing-related research funded by individual Research Councils.
LLHW builds on the first cross-council ageing research initiative, New Dynamics of Ageing (NDA) which was established in 2005 as the first cross-council ageing research funding venture. A total of £20m was committed to the seven- year NDA programme to support multidisciplinary research across a range of ageing challenges.
Lifelong Health and Wellbeing is led by the Medical Research Council on behalf of:
- Arts and Humanities Research Council
- Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council
- Economic and Social Research Council
- Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council
