Using the UK Stem Cell Bank

The next meeting of the UK Stem Cell Bank Steering Committee will be a virtual one, in February 2013. The deadline for the submission of applications for consideration at this meeting is 30th January 2013.

This page provides information about how to apply to use human embryonic stem cell lines in the UK or deposit human stem cell lines in the Bank.

Approval of human stem cell lines and their use

The Steering Committee for the UK Bank and for the Use of Stem Cell Lines must satisfy itself that human embryonic stem cell (hESC) lines used in the UK

  • have been ethically sourced with informed donor consents;
  • are to be used for valuable and ethical research projects reflecting the requirements of the HFEA regulations.

UK Stem Cell Line Registry

The UK Stem Cell Line registry lists human embryonic stem cell lines that have been approved by the Steering Committee for use in/import into the UK. Researchers wishing to use/import these cell lines must apply to the Steering Committee for approval of their project, using the forms below.

Code of practice for the use of human stem cell lines

All research involving the use of hESC lines must comply with the code of practice for the use of human stem cell lines. This applies to hESC lines accessed from the UK stem cell bank, as well as those obtained from other sources. Approvals are granted on a project by project basis.
