2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours for MRC scientists and staff

The Medical Research Council (MRC) congratulates the following people on their recognition in the 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours list:
Dr Hugh Pelham was appointed director of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in 2006. Dr Pelham has been a staff member at LMB since 1981. He became head of the Cell Biology Division in 1992 and was made deputy director in 1996. His research interests are in basic cell biology, particularly the organisation of the internal membranes in cells. Dr Pelham is a member of the board of MRC Technology. Until recently, he was a member of the MRC Strategy Board.

Professor Sally Macintyre is director of the Institute of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow and is honorary director of the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit. Professor Macintyre is a medical sociologist and previously held posts in Aberdeen University; she was awarded an honorary DSc by the University of Aberdeen in 2005. She was appointed director of the (then) MRC Medical Sociology Unit in 1984 when it moved to Glasgow. Professor Macintyre was awarded an OBE for services to Medical Sociology in 1998 and a CBE for services to Social Science in 2006. Since 2008, Professor Macintyre has been a member of the MRC’s Council.
Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) - for services to science.
Professor Ian Kimber is a professor of Toxicology at the University of Manchester and is the chair of the board of the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs). Professor Kimber serves on a number of national and international scientific and advisory committees. He is chair of the MRC Industrial Collaborative Training and Careers Panel and a member of the MRC Training and Careers Group.
Order of the British Empire (OBE) - for services to science.
Dr Henry Burns was appointed as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Scotland in 2005. As the Scottish Government’s principal medical advisor, his role involves influencing the development of health policies in areas such as prevention, health promotion and protection and harm reduction. Dr Burns is a former member of the MRC’s Council.

Lesley Caple was awarded an MBE for her services to the MRC, where she was the head of Head Office Management and oversaw estates, finance and human resources.
Order of the British Empire (MBE) – for services to the Medical Research Council.
Professor Robert Edwards was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2010 for his pioneering work in the development of in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Professor Edwards became a staff scientist at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in 1958, where he began research on the human fertilisation process. In 1978, Professor Edwards co-founded, with Patrick Steptoe, the world’s first IVF Clinic, the Bourn Hall Clinic.
