New member appointed to MRC Council
Professor Paul Morgan, Dean and Head of the Cardiff University School of Medicine, has been appointed as a member of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Council. His term runs from 1 April 2011 to 31 March 2015.
The MRC strives to improve human health and quality of life by supporting world class medical research. It is governed by its Council, which directs and oversees corporate policy, ensures effective management, and makes major policy and spending decisions.
Sir John Chisholm, Chairman of the MRC, said: “I am delighted to welcome Professor Morgan to the Council. He is an excellent appointment and I look forward to working with him. Dedicated Council members are vital to drive the MRC’s mission to tackle the major health challenges, and I am certain that Professor Morgan’s input will be both valuable and constructive.”
Professor Morgan’s appointment has been made by the Minister for Universities and Science in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice. Professor Morgan does not hold any other Ministerial appointments.
All appointments to the Medical Research Council are made on merit, and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Professor Morgan has not declared any political activity.
Professor Morgan will receive remuneration of £6,850 per year for the appointment.
Biography
Professor Paul Morgan became Dean and Head of the Cardiff University School of Medicine in 2009, having previously held the position of Head of the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Immunology since 2001.
Professor Morgan is also deputy chair of the Wales Office of Research and Development Funding Committee. He is a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) Academic Careers Committee, having previously been a member of the AMS Council. He holds fellowships from the Royal College of Pathologists and the Academy of Medical Sciences.
