Pre-announcement by the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases of a new programme in Implementation Research in hypertension in Low and Middle Income Countries.

6 January 2011

The MRC is delighted to announce that the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD), of which it is a founding member, intends to release a Request for Applications (RFA) in April 2011, for studies focusing on implementation research to improve effective approaches to the prevention and control of hypertension in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs).

Other members of the Global Alliance include the South African Medical Research Council. The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS).

Hypertension is a major contributor to the growing pandemic of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Poor control rates for hypertension and a lack of strategies to maintain normal blood pressure, especially in LMICs, reflect the challenges of effective and affordable implementation in health care and other systems. This call will seek to improve the implementation of existing approaches to prevention and control of hypertension rather than to developing new treatments.

The MRC will provide further details of eligibility and funding at the time of the call in April 2011. Further details can be found on http://www.ga-cd.org/ .
