New member appointed to MRC Council

Professor Christopher Day, Professor of Liver Medicine and Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University, has been appointed to the Medical Research Council (MRC) Council from 1 April 2010 to 31 March 2014. Professor Day is currently a member of the MRC Translational Stem Cell Research Programme.
The MRC improves human health by supporting world class medical research. It is governed by its Council, which directs and oversees corporate policy, ensures that the MRC is effectively managed, and makes major policy and spending decisions.
The appointment has been made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice. Professor Day will receive remuneration of £6,850 per year for the appointment.
Professor Day does not hold any other Ministerial appointments.
All appointments to the Medical Research Council are made on merit, and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Professor Day has not declared any political activity.
Biography
Christopher Day became Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in 2008, having held the position of Professor of Liver Medicine since 2000. Professor Day is also chairman of NUMED Malaysia, the international branch campus of Newcastle University in Johor, Malaysia. He is a non-executive director of Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a member of the Medical Advisory Committee for the British Liver Trust, as well as being a member of Drinkaware Trust Advisory Panel and a trustee of the Alcohol Education and Research Council.
