2010 Queens Birthday Honours for MRC Scientists

The Medical Research Council (MRC) congratulates the following people on their recognition in the 2010 Queen’s Birthday Honours list:
Professor Veronica van Heyningen is a group leader in the Medical and Developmental Genetics Section at the MRC Human Genetics Unit. Her research focuses on identifying human disease genes and mutations that can reveal how normal biology works and also how it can go wrong in disease. Professor van Heyningen is also the President of the Genetics Society.
Order of the British Empire – Commander (CBE) for services to science
Professor Ann Jacqueline Hunter is the former senior vice-president and head of Science Environment Development at GlaxoSmithKline. Professor Hunter is currently a member of the MRC Translational Research Group.
Order of the British Empire – Commander (CBE) for services to the
pharmaceutical Industry.
Professor Deborah Smith is Professor of Molecular Parasitology at the University of York and former chair of the MRC Infections and Immunity Board. Professor Smith’s work focuses on kinetoplastid parasites that cause human disease, such as Leishmaniasis and African Sleeping Sickness, in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world.
Order of the British Empire – Officer (OBE) for services to science
Professor Iain Robinson is the recently retired head of the Neurosciences Group at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research. Professor Robinson's scientific interests involve hormones and the control of growth. His achievements include the development of an automative continuous sampling technique, which he has used to study the release pattern of growth hormone in male and female rats and factors that influence it.
Order of the British Empire – Member (MBE) for services to science
Keith Tucker is the former head of the MRC Estates Management Group. During his time at MRC he was instrumental in the development of the new MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge. Construction of the new LMB building is due to be completed in 2012.
