A day of discovery

5 August 2009

The MRC Annual Review 08/09: A day of discovery is published today. This year’s review takes readers on a journey through a typical MRC working day, visiting eight people across the UK who are involved in different areas of MRC research.

For example nine-year old Amie and her mum, Alison, talk about what it’s been like to be part of the Southampton Women’s Survey, a long-term study of women’s health and lifestyles which follows women through pregnancy and beyond.

Also profiled is Dr Ruth Loos, who last year discovered the second ever genetic variant associated with obesity. She speaks about her work in the exciting new field of genome-wide association, which allows scientists to analyse the genomes of hundreds of thousands of people at once to spot slight variations in genes that are linked with disease.

The review highlights some of the best scientific achievements and discoveries made by the MRC’s talented scientists over the last year – from fundamental studies in genes, cells and molecules to translating research into treatments.

Copies of the review are available now in all MRC units, centres and institutes. To order more copies, email annualreview@headoffice.mrc.ac.uk.
