Scientists and designers make perfect match

Scientists and designers are teaming up to create designs that celebrate and communicate science at ‘Designer Seeks Scientist’, the Nobelini event at the Science Museum’s Dana Centre on Tuesday 26 May.

Hosted by designer Carole Collet (Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design) and scientist Steve Nurrish (University College London), scientists and designers will be paired together in a blind-date style event. After being introduced to each potential pair, the audience will vote for the most compatible partners.

The selected scientist-designer pairs will afterwards be set a task to be completed by September – to conjure up a design that conveys science across four broad themes – stem cells, energy and recycling, imaging and synthetic/systems biology.

Proposals will be reviewed in September 2009 for a follow-up event, at which several £2000 prizes will be awarded to support the development of the proposed design prototypes.

Event host Carole Collet said:
“Designers shape the way we live while scientists pervade the very fabric of our lives. For the young designer, keeping up with scientific advance is both a challenge and a source of inspiration.
“Scientists are often called upon to explain their research to non-specialist audiences. Communicating this is often challenging and successful approaches may involve ‘fresh ideas’ as well as experience.”
The scheme, sponsored by the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre, aims to pair up 30 designers and scientists. This showcase event will feature eight of the 60 participants.
