MRC student wins prize in science poster competition
1 October 2008
An MRC-funded PhD student won a top award in the British Association for the Advancement of Science (BA) poster competition.
Jamie Brown, from the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Cambridge, scooped runner up prize in the Research Councils UK (RCUK)-funded Perspectives competition, which required scientists to design and produce posters communicating their research and its impact on society.
Jamie, who investigates the role of learning in autism spectrum disorders, was one of 36 scientists selected in May to exhibit a poster. The posters were on display at the BA Festival of Science from 7-11 September 2008 at the University of Liverpool.
The shortlist attended BA workshops during June and July to gain advice and guidance on developing their posters. At the festival, the researchers stood in front of their posters, presenting their work and answering questions about its implications from members of the public.
A panel of judges compared how well the posters conveyed the impact of the research on society, and to what extent the research has been shaped by society. The panel also took into account the competence of scientists’ oral communication of the research and its importance.
