Three images captured by MRC scientists have won Wellcome Trust Image Awards 2008.
Mouse embryo: James Sharpe, MRC Human Genetics Unit, Edinburgh

Eleven-and-a-half days-old mouse embryo captured by James Sharpe of the MRC Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh using optical projection tomography, a new imaging technique that allows scientists to study the internal structures of organisms.
Heart tissue is stained red, parts of the nervous system are stained green, the blue stain shows areas that what will eventually develop into the brain, spinal chord, the respiratory system and the digestive tract. Unstained tissue appears grey.
Molecular model of a ribosome: Venki Ramakrishnan MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge

This image represents a molecular model of a bacterial ribosome, a ribosome translates the code carried from DNA on messenger RNA to build molecules of protein inside the cell. This image shows the RNA and protein components of the ribosome.
Seminiferous tubule: Kate Sullivan, MRC National Institute for Medical Research, London

This image shows a cross section through a seminiferous tubule, long tightly coiled tubes in the testes in which sperm are produced. It shows the developing sperm with their tails pointing into the centre of the tube. The nuclei (head) are stained blue, the tails appear red.
