MRC funds regional hubs for clinical trials methods

The MRC has launched an initiative to establish UK wide regional centres of excellence that will undertake high-quality research into clinical trials methodology. The £12 million initiative – the second wave of funding for methodology research from the MRC and National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) partnership – aims to position the UK as a leader in methods development.

As part of the strategy to turn research into health and economic benefits more efficiently, the methodology hubs will underpin the substantial increase in clinical trials activity being planned by the MRC and NIHR for early and late phase clinical trials. The centres will have close links with those carrying out clinical trials. Within individual hubs there may be specific clinical and methodological expertise.

The deadline for proposals from potential host institutions is the beginning of April 2008. The initiative will be managed by the MRC on behalf of the partnership.
