New Year honours for MRC
Congratulations to the following MRC-associated people whose achievements were recognised in the New Year honours list.
Knights Bachelor
Professor John Savill MRC Council member; professor of experimental medicine, vice principal and head of the college of medicine and veterinary medicine, University of Edinburgh. Professor Savill was formerly director of the MRC/University of Edinburgh Centre for Inflammation Research. His research is funded by the MRC and the Wellcome Trust.
Order of the British Empire - Dame Commander (DBE)
Professor Kay Davies former MRC Council member; Dr Lee’s professor of anatomy and associate head of the department of physiology, anatomy and genetics, honorary director of the MRC Functional Genetics Unit and co-director of the Oxford centre for gene function at the University of Oxford. Professor Davies’ research is funded by the MRC, various muscular dystrophy charities, and the Wellcome Trust.

Professor Ian Wilmut director of the MRC-funded Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine, and co-creator of the world’s first cloned mammal Dolly the sheep in 1996.
Order of the British Empire - Commander (CBE)
Professor Ole Petersen MRC research professor and George Holt professor of physiology, University of Liverpool.
Order of the British Empire – Officer (OBE)
Professor Jean Manson head of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy division, Roslin Institute and BBSRC / MRC Neuropathogenesis Unit.
Order of the British Empire – Member (MBE)
Mr Derek Flint former member of the MRC’s Council. Formerly a director and trustee of the Babraham Institute, Mr Flint has a background in financial services banking, insurance and investment. During his term of office on MRC Council he was chairman of the MRC Council audit committee, a member of the MRC employee representations forum, and a director of MRC Technology.
Order of the British Empire – Member (MBE)
Ms Jenny Brightwell personal secretary to the director, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge.
Others closely associated with the MRC include Professor Alex Markham, former chief executive of Cancer Research UK and former MRC training board chair; and Professor John Bell, former MRC Council member and regius professor of medicine at University of Oxford; both of whom have received knighthoods.
