Improving links with health-related industry

Professor Ian Kimber has begun working with MRC Head Office as Senior Advisor on Industry Liaison in Research Management Group. He will work with MRC committees and staff to improve links with all the health-related industry sectors. This, in turn will help to inform MRC strategy and MRC policy on funding schemes, and identify and develop opportunities for collaboration.

The MRC chief executive, Professor Colin Blakemore, explained the importance of the role:

“We want to maximise the value and impact of our research and training. MRC Technology has an outstanding track record at turning MRC discoveries into commercial products. But we want to develop other, innovative ways of working with industry, in research partnerships, science strategy development, and training initiatives. Ian’s experience and knowledge will help us to move forward much more quickly in these areas.”

Professor Kimber is currently based at Syngenta CTL in Cheshire. He has researched extensively in toxicology, immunology and allergy, and dermatology. He has previously been Deputy Chair of the MRC’s former Physiological Medicine and Infections Board, and is a member of the MRC Training and Career Development Board.

From August 2007, he will be Professor of Toxicology at Manchester University, as well as working part-time with MRC. He is also an advisor to the Food Standards Agency and serves on the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority Committee on Safety of Devices.

Dr Joe McNamara (MRC Research Management Group) and Dr Rob Lang (MRCT) will work closely with Ian on industry liaison.
