20 million pounds to boost public health research

11th January 2007

Up to five new centres of excellence in public health research are to be created in the UK thanks to an investment of £20 million from a collaboration of funders brought together by the UK Clinical Research Collaboration.

Funding for the centres of excellence will be made on a competitive basis with up to five million pounds available for each Centre over a five year period. A call for proposals will be issued with a closing date of 27th March. Funding decisions will be made in December 2007, the administration will be handled by the Economic and Social Research Council in partnership with the National Prevention Research Initiative (NPRI) Secretariat.

The public health research centres will bring scientists, clinicians and policy makers together to tackle major public health issues such as smoking and obesity.

This new funding will enable the centres to build academic capacity by introducing new research posts, alongside career development and training programmes. It will also provide the infrastructure needed to support public health research, including technical staff, IT systems, equipment and administrative support.

Funding partners include the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Department of Health, Economic and Social Research Council, Medical Research Council, Research and Development Office for the Northern Ireland Health and Personal Social Services, Wales Office of Research and Development Welsh Assembly Government and The Wellcome Trust.
