MRC/ESRC Interdisciplinary studentships

This studentship programme is now closed for applications and is available for reference purposes only.

The ESRC/MRC interdisciplinary studentships competition has been developed to fund PhD Studentships in research areas of interest to both the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Medical Research Council (MRC). It is open to applications which require the combined approaches, methodology and expertise of both medical and social sciences.

Overview

Proposals should address the interests of both the ESRC and the MRC and must be genuinely interdisciplinary in approach. Applicants should ensure their proposal engages with the ESRC research challenges and MRC strategic priorities.

While proposals are invited from any sub- discipline of the social or medical sciences the following areas have been identified as of particular interest to the two councils:

  • Lifelong Health and Wellbeing
  • Understanding Individual Behaviour
  • Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (including Health Inequalities)
  • Research Using (i) Large Social Sciences and (ii) Health Research &/or Clinical Research Data Sets (Including e-health Records)

Durations: Applications can be either +3 awards, where a Masters has been completed beforehand, or 1+3 awards where a 3 year PhD is incorporated with a Masters course.

From 2009, the ESRC will be responsible for administering the scheme.

Applications should be submitted though the Je-S System. Applications will be supervisor lead, with students nominated at the time of application. Full details and guidance notes can be found on the ESRC web site.
