Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020 will be the successor to the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) and will fund EU research and innovation from 2014-2020.
The European Commission has proposed a budget of €80billion for Horizon 2020, which would represent a significant increase compared to FP7. The final budget, however, is subject to the ongoing Multiannual Financial Framework negotiations between the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament.
The programme has been designed to support the Europe 2020 Flagship Initiative "Innovation Union", and the basic principle of "Horizon 2020" is to adopt a more strategic approach to research and innovation. It will play a central role in delivering the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.
Horizon 2020 seeks to fully integrate EU research and innovation activities by combining all research and innovation funding currently provided through:
- Seventh Framework Programme (FP7);
- Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) elements;
- European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).
Horizon 2020 will provide a major simplification by standardising the rules for these programmes.
