Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND) - identification of genetic, epigenetic and environmental risk and protective factors
JPND is a trans-national initiative that aims to address the growing societal challenge presented by age-related neurodegenerative diseases. It involves research funders from 27 member countries.
Spanning biomedical, healthcare and social science research, JPND aims to increase coordinated investment between participating countries in research aimed at finding causes, developing cures, and identifying appropriate ways to care for those with neurodegenerative diseases. MRC is supporting the 2012 JPND call for proposals seeking to identify new genetic, epigenetic and environmental risk and protective factors associated with neurodegenerative disorders. The aim of this call is to establish a limited number of ambitious, innovative, multi-national and multi-disciplinary collaborative research projects that will add value to existing research in this area.
Proposals must involve teams from three or more participating JPND member countries and should be for up to three years in duration. Proposals that span more than one neurodegenerative disease area are encouraged.
The call and peer review will be administered through a central JPND process, for which MRC will be represented throughout. Funding for UK participants in successful collaborative bids will be provided by the MRC through the Neurosciences and Mental Health Board. The MRC is contributing a total of €2.5M (£2m) towards the funding available through the call, and anticipates that this sum will be able to provide substantive support for the involvement of UK groups in 3 to 5 trans-national awards.
