Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases

This call is now closed for applications and is available for reference purposes only - The MRC has made one award of around £700,000 ($1.1m) for an innovative educational school programme China aiming to reduce dietary intake of salt for both children and their families. The MRC is hopeful that it can announce further funding under this scheme in the coming weeks.

Request for Applications (RFA): Hypertension Prevention and Control in low and middle income countries (LMICs)

The Medical Research Council, in partnership with the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD), is seeking research project proposals to investigate hypertension prevention and control in LMICs, with an emphasis on implementation science. MRC plans to invest up to £2.5m in this RFA, funding several research projects. Outline Proposals must be submitted via Je-S by 4pm on 21 July 2011.

Hypertension is a major contributor to the growing global pandemic of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Poor control rates for hypertension and a lack of strategies to maintain normal blood pressure, particularly in LMICs, reflect the challenges of effective and affordable implementation in health care and other systems. The scope of the call is on proposals which emphasize implementation science in Low and Middle Income Countries, with a focus on existing approaches to prevention and control of hypertension rather than the development of new treatments.

The long term goal of this RFA is for the results of projects to provide healthcare providers and decision-makers with the scientific evidence to implement effective programs that will:

  • 1. Reduce the prevalence of cardiovascular disease developing as a consequence of high blood pressure and;
  • 2. Inform implementation and enable scale-up of larger programs at local, national and regional levels.
  •

    Research projects should include a focus on one or more of the four components that are crucial for the prevention and control of high blood pressure, namely prevention, awareness, treatment and maintenance. Innovative approaches will be encouraged and a variety of approaches may be utilized.
