Environmental Exposure & Health Initiative (EEHI)
This call is now closed for applications and is available for reference purposes only.
A joint initiative supported by the Medical Research Council (MRC), Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Department of Health (DH), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) with additional strategic support from Department for Transport, Environment Agency, Food Standards Agency, Health Protection Agency, Scotland and Northern Ireland Forum for Environmental Research, Scottish Environment Protection Agency, and UK Water Industry Research.
Under this initiative the above partners invite high quality, innovative, and inter-disciplinary proposals that address the relationship between environmental pollutants and interacting stressors and human health with the aim to advance the development of evidence-based policies. The initiative seeks to support truly integrative and collaborative research programmes that tackle real world questions addressing the interconnections and pathways between environmental pollutants, exposures, early effects (e.g. biomarkers) and health outcomes in humans, including variations in susceptibility and the definition of health risks. The call for proposals is launched under the umbrella of the Living with Environmental Change (LWEC) partnership (www.lwec.org.uk). The call will contribute to the LWEC objective to protect human health by predicting how environmental hazards will alter under forthcoming environmental change scenarios. To fulfil this objective it is crucial to gain a better understanding of the relationship between environmental quality, ecosystems health and human health.
Up to £8-10m funding is available to support four to six large strategic collaborative programmes for up to four years. It is expected that these will provide leadership in focussed aspects of environmental health research and are sustainable in the medium to longer term by attracting grant funding from other sources.
For further information on the objectives, specification, review process and timetable please see the Environmental Exposure and Health Initiative microsite.
