Containment level 3 standards
The Safety, Security and Resilience Section is committed to working with the Estates Management Section and, wherever appropriate, with other collaborators to prepare standards for designers, engineers and others providing specialist buildings for the MRC.
- Building Standards Containment Level 3 (September 2005)
This document is the result of collaboration with the Health and Safety Section at Imperial College London. It is an updated version of the first edition which was published in 2003. It is intended for those professionals who are designing and building Biological Containment Level 3 laboratories for the MRC or Imperial College. It complements the advice contained in the ACDP document 'The management, design and operation of microbiological containment laboratories', published by the HSE.
Please note the following:
These standards are designed for use in the MRC and co-author organisations (where applicable), whose respective facilities will be designed and built to the standards set out herein. The copyright holders of these documents accept no responsibility for the use of these standards by others.
Standards for Radioisotope Laboratories
Any work with radioactive substances raises particular health and safety issues. The standard outlines the factors that must be taken into account when working with exposed radioactive sources. It also includes comprehensive guidance on how to design a radioisotope work area, from risk assessment to furnishing, and sets out the levels of protection required for radioactivity workers.
- Standards for Radioisotope Laboratories (Handbook. May 2004)
Guidance for Managing Laboratory Equipment that contains Radioactive Isotopes
The MRC Corporate Safety, Security and Resilience Function in consultation with its Radiation Protection Adviser has produced an advisory note on the management of laboratory equipment that contains radioactive isotopes. The advice is aimed at MRC units that own or are otherwise responsible for laboratory equipment containing radioactive sources and is provided solely for use by MRC units. The advice takes into account recent changes in environmental permitting requirements.
