Revised guidance on research continuity planning has now been published for the attention of local safety coordinators.

This is a revision of previous policy and guidance on noise control to reflect changes in industry standards over the last few years.

Revised Policy and Guidance on First Aid has now been published for the attention of local safety personnel, first aiders and senior management with responsibility for first aid.

This is a revision of previous policy and guidance to reflect the current recommendations of legislation and guidance on first aid.

Revised Policy and Guidance on Security has now been published for the attention of local security personnel and senior management responsible for security.

It is a revision of previous Policy and Guidance notes to reflect the current requirements of the Security Policy Framework, and replaces those documents. The documents outline the policies, procedures and practices that should be in place to comply with the requirements of the framework.

MRC has published revised policy and guidance on managing electrical safety

Revised Policy and Guidance on Electrical Safety has now been published for the attention of local safety personnel, maintenance managers and others with responsibility for electrical safety. It is a revision of our 2001 Policy and Guidance notes, and replaces those documents. The documents outline the policies, procedures and practices that should be in place to comply with current legislation and approved guidance.

MRC has published advice on managing laboratory equipment which contains radioactive sources. The advisory note takes into account recent changes in environmental permitting requirements

The MRC Corporate Safety, Security and Resilience Function in consultation with its Radiation Protection Adviser has produced an advisory note on the management of laboratory equipment that contains radioactive isotopes. The advice is aimed at MRC units that own or are otherwise responsible for laboratory equipment containing radioactive sources and is provided solely for use by MRC units. The advice takes into account recent changes in environmental permitting requirements.

The MRC has published a revised version of the Code of Good Health and Safety Practice. The new version strengthens our position on the wearing of personal protective equipment, including laboratory coats.

The Code affirms MRC’s position on mandatory wearing of personal protective equipment. GHSP includes consideration of attitude and behavioural risks to self, colleagues, and visitors.

Revised policy and guidance for ‘Procedures for the opening of new establishments’ and ‘Vacating premises’ are available.

The two related policy and guidance documents have been revised and relocated together in the ‘general’ section. Apart for the reformatting, information has been updated to reflect changes in legislation and other requirements over the past decade.

A new policy on eye protection has been published.

Injuries to the eye continue to occur in MRC establishments. This has necessitated the introduction of a new policy on eye protection that requires it to be worn in all laboratory and other designated work areas, unless a risk assessment determines it is no necessary.

Policy and guidance on accident and incident reporting and investigation has been updated and revised and is now available

The instruction and guidance in this document outline the management structure that should be in place within an MRC establishment to ensure that any accident, incident or dangerous occurrence that occurs whilst an activity is being carried out on behalf of or for the MRC is properly documented and investigated.

It also describes the steps that must be taken if it is necessary to report such an accident or dangerous occurrence to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE – which is the regulating authority).

Eye protection: a guide to provision and use (Booklet. July 2010)

The first annual health and safety communication competition took place in 2009.  The subject was ‘Eye protection’.  The joint winners were MRC Epidemiology Unit for their suite of posters now in use across the MRC and MRC CSC Hammersmith for their booklet ‘Eye protection: a guide to provision and use’. This booklet, after minor adaptations to enable its use across the MRC, is now downloadable from this website.

Allergy – revised January 2009

Replaces the 2003/05 policy and guidance. The new document draws attention to the possible allergenic hazards associated with working with insects and provides guidance on best practice. Additional information is also included when considering food sources as possible sensitisers. Please remove all previous versions from your records.

“Code of Good Health and Safety”

A new document called "Code of Good Health and Safety" is now available. The Code of Good Health and Safety Practice (GHSP) is a code that reflects the work practices, ethos and culture of the MRC.

   

New guidance on the use of liquid nitrogen

The MRC Safety, Security and Resilience section and CryoService Ltd have published new guidance on the use of liquid nitrogen, including guidance on installation. All MRC establishments that make use of liquid nitrogen will be sent a copy.  Copies for non-MRC establishments can be obtained from CryoService Ltd.  Further information can be found in the Press Release.
