Key facts about the Strategy Board
Strategy Board advises the Chief Executive on the distribution of budgets across the research boards and allocates funding from the Strategic Research Fund and Translational Research Fund, including large and cross-cutting strategic investments. In addition, the board oversees the MRC’s programme of Strategic Reviews, making recommendations to Council on the outcomes and implementation of strategic decisions.
Strategy Board meets eight times per year. The board is chaired by the Chief Executive. Membership consists of chairs of the four research boards (Infections and Immunity, Molecular and Cellular Medicine, Neurosciences and Mental Health, Population and Systems Medicine), chairs of the four overview groups (Global Health, Population Health Sciences, Training and Careers, Translational Research), a director of an MRC institute, Chief Operating Officer, Director of Research and Training and Director of Strategy.
Strategic funding decisions
The Board has a strategic budget of about £50 - 60 million per year, which it uses to fund large and cross-cutting strategic investments, which cannot easily be taken through normal board funding routes. Any Higher Education Institution (HEI) may submit proposals in outline, and full HEI proposals will normally be taken through a fast-track peer review process prior to a Strategy Board decision.
Strategy Board also takes decisions on major partnerships with other funders, on pump-priming awards, and on cross-board calls for proposals.
