What is equality & diversity?

What is equality?

Equality is about making sure people are treated fairly and given fair chances. Equality is not about treating everyone in the same way, but it recognises that their needs are met in different ways.

Promoting equality should remove discrimination in the areas of race, gender, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation and age. Bullying, harassment or victimisation are also considered as equality and diversity issues.

What is diversity?

Diversity is about recognising, respecting and valuing individual difference, allowing everyone to realise their full potential by promoting an inclusive culture for all staff and students, whilst making the MRC a better place for everyone.

How can we promote equality and diversity?

We can promote equality and diversity by:

  • treating all staff fairly
  • creating an inclusive culture for all
  • ensuring equal access to opportunities to enable staff to fully participate in learning and development
  • enabling all staff to develop to their full potential
  • equipping staff with the skills to challenge inequality and discrimination in their work/research/study environment
  • ensuring our policies, procedures and processes do not discriminate
  • developing stronger internal and external communications on equality issues, ensuring that people’s views are listened to and responded to
